Taman Negara Bukit Kana, Tatau Sarawak

「ENGLISH VERSION BELOW」

English:

Million thanks to @unzip’s sharing, I was able to discover another hidden gem in Sarawak. Here’s my sharing based on my personal experience, which feel free to use it as reference material.

1) Where is the location of Bukit Kana and how to reach there? 🚗

Bukit Kana National Park is a mountain located at Tatau district in Central Sarawak. It is roughly 40km away from the town of Tatau and 100km away from the city of Bintulu. The waterfall as seen in the photo is located near to the foot of Bukit Kana, next to the waterfall it is actually an abandoned forest research Centre. It is highly recommended to download the app “Maps.me” before you come, as the trail is well marked in the app. The place is hard to navigate, remote and without signal, it is advised to learn how to use offline map and do sufficient homework before you come, and never ever come hiking alone.

🧭How to reach here?

  • After arriving the town of Tatau from Bintulu, drive straight after passing the Tatau Bridge and Shell Petrol Station (on your right hand side) then turn left to Jalan Sangan-Tatau (GPS: 2.875393, 112.837394)

  • Drive straight along Jalan Sangan till the end of the road, there will be a junction (GPS: 2.763014, 112.970481) then turn right.

  • Drive straight all the way as you will see the beautiful Bukit Kana in front of your eyes, turn right just before you reach Kana river Bridge (GPS: 02°40′00″N 112°56′08.37″E).

  • From here, the road will turn from proper tar to bumpy roads. Drive straight for about 8-10 minutes you will see a road with iron bar barrier gate on your left, this is where you should stop your car and ready for hiking (GPS: 02°39′53.26″N112°55′29.35″E).

  • From there, you will cross the Iron Gate and start hiking under the sun for 5km in order to reach the destination. When you’re about to reach the waterfall, you will see a big gate and a big sign written “Selamat Datang ke Taman Negara Bukit Kana”. You will then cross the big gate and walk in for another 1km or less to reach the abandoned research Centre. Once you reach the Centre, the location of the waterfall is on the right hand side. You will need to walk through the tall grass in order to reach the top of the waterfall.

2. Must bring 🎒

Food, sunblock and WATER! You will need to walk for 5km under the exposure of hot sun therefore it is important to drink enough of water to avoid heat stroke. In addition, if you are interested to take a dip into the water around the waterfall, please don’t forget to bring towels and some clean dry clothes.

Note: As a visitors, we leave only footprints, not rubbish!

3. Other things to take note ⚠️

Since this is a suburban forest area, it is strongly encouraged not to come alone and also do not talk anything nonsense or inappropriate along the way. Respect the jungle and also to prevent yourself for any unnecessary troubles. I and my friend both of us did heard some weird lion-like roaring sounds and also sounds like someone walking through the woods near us, so just be careful and don’t talk nonsense.

It was recently found out that the waterfall or national park itself is currently still not open for public yet. This is just my personal experience sharing. If there is any error in the shared information here, I will not bear any responsibility, visit at your own risk.

Thanks for reading.
